In 2015 Scopus provided dimensional control survey services as part of the addition of two port side free-fall lifeboats, on Teekay’s Foinaven asset. Following the successful build control for the new lifeboat davit support structures, Scopus was requested to initiate the same process on the starboard side, but this time leveraging its integrated structural engineering services in addition to its survey offering.
With the input of its structural engineering team, Scopus was able to modify the initial design and incorporate offshore as-built survey data to deliver a simpler and more efficient offshore install. Scopus was involved throughout the duration of the project, both offshore and onshore at key stages of build and installation.
A novel approach was used whereby a permanent offshore presence allowed Scopus to assist with confirmation surveys of lifting and rigging equipment and also to demonstrate predicted clearances for offshore installation. This gave the deck crew team the confidence to safely carry out critical installation lifts on the FPSO. Even with an offshore focal point, Scopus still changed traditional thinking and practices to minimise the initial projected volume of work carried out offshore, saving the client cost, and reducing risk and schedule.
- Integrated team approach between Scopus and client both onshore and offshore
- Ability to simplify the scope
- Utilising previous experience allowed a streamlined approach with regards to interfaces, cost and schedule.
- Involvement throughout all phases to ensure successful installation
