Unlocking efficiency through bespoke creation of a processing unit’s digital twin

Scopus’ customer required accurate as-built information to enable design and engineering work to be carried out on one of their processing units. Using high-spec laser scanners and a bespoke 3D model, Scopus obtained all information, created to meet the customer’s specification.

Additionally, Scopus created a full digital twin of the processing unit to deliver on the customer’s strategy of increasing the plant’s efficiency.

Consultancy: Scopus provided the customer guidance on the most efficient ways to capture as-built information of their plant efficiently. Sample datasets from our range of scalable solutions was provided to allow the customer to determine their exact requirements.

Laser scanning: Scopus mobilised its team of experienced laser scanning surveyors to conduct the fieldwork. State of the art laser scanners were utilised which, in combination with our streamlined procedures, allowed for accurate and high-quality data to be captured.

Data processing: The data processing of the laser scan data was carried out using the latest technological advancements, allowing this to be completed efficiently and cost effectively.

3D modelling: Utilising laser scan information collected, this was converted into a 3D model in our customer’s specific format requirements. Automated processes for the modelling were extensively used with all other work being carried out in a high-value execution centre. Intelligent information was added to the model where required, allowing the customer to fully utilise this Digital Twin in an operational environment.

Handover of data: Once the 3D model was completed, Scopus supported our customer in integrating the model into their IT system and provided support and training where required.


Scopus delivered a full lifecycle service to create a digital twin, from the initial consultation to the handover of data to the customer. With a multitude of technologies and solutions available, it was important that Scopus fully understood and delivered exactly what the customer required and was aligned with their digitisation strategy.

By utilising technology to its full advantage, Scopus were able to deliver this project to the customer in a short timeframe, whilst delivering a product that will add benefit to the customer’s operation for years to come.
